Research Bibliography

WordWeb/IDEM offerscontextualized access to research results that have been generated in many different countries and academic communities from the eighteenth century to the present. Here is a list of sources from various fields that have helped us to find intertextual references in early modern plays:

Literary and cultural studies: sources and reception history of early modern drama
Shakespeare Studies: sources and reception history of his works
Annotated Editions: early modern plays and non-dramatic texts

The earliest titles in this list are the 1616 edition of Ben Jonson's works, in which he annotates the Classical sources of his own plays, Dodsley's Selection of Old Plays (1744), a Milton edition from 1749 and a Horace commentary from 1751 which point out Classical Shakespeare references and early Shakespeare quotations, for example in Paradise Lost. The most substantial group of books are PhDs supervised by the Strasbourg professor Emil Koeppel (1852-1917), himself an extremely widely-read authority on the sources of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
